HEADS UP FOR NEXT SEASON PART II

Here are some more resorts that are doing early deals:

Brighton- UT
A Season Pass is $849 (you need to go 14 times to break even), a midweek pass is $485 (eight times to break even), and a night pass is $319 (10 times to break even). To get these deals you need to purchase them before 9/15/2011. http://www.brightonresort.com/ticketspasses.seasonpasses.html

Loon Mountain- NH, Sunday River- ME, and Sugar Loaf- ME
The New England Pass is a season pass for Loon, Sunday River, and Sugar Loaf. The Gold New England pass is $999 (17 times to break even). The Silver New England pass is $699 (12 times to break even). The Bronze New England pass is $439 (eight times to break even).  These deals are good until 10/10/11.
http://www.loonmtn.com/info/winter/rates_passes.aspx

Sugarbush- VT
Sugarbush does a recent college grad. pass (I've never seen that before), so if you graduate in 2011 you can get a season pass for $319 (before 9/15/2011). The season pass is $1,259, you need to go 15 times to break even (an all mountain pass is $84). A mid week pass is $529 (seven times to break even). The Mt. Ellen Pass is $549. All of these deals are good until 9/15/2011, then prices go up. There is also a SugarDirect card that gives you 25% off mid week, 20% off weekends, discounts on lodging and food, an all mountain pass when you purchase the Sugardirect card and an all mountain pass after you have purchased 10 passes. http://www.sugarbush.com/vermont-skiing-snowboarding/season-passes

Wolf Creek- CO
Wolf Creek has a season pass for $574 before Oct. 9th (eleven times to break even). http://www.wolfcreekski.com/wolf-creek-season-passes.php

Whistler- Canada
I think the most affordable way to visit Whistler is to take advantage of the Early Booking Deals. If you buy your vacation before 8/31/11 you can save up to 45%. (http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/deals_packages/packages/earlybooking/index.htm) Here are some of the deals: four nights and 3 days on the hill is $87 a person, seven nights and five days is $81 a person, and eight nights and six days is $82 a person. A mountain pass is $96 so it's like you are staying or skiing for free. These are Canadian prices but our currency is practically the same at the moment.
Whistler also has discounted tickets for sale until Nov. 15. The best deal seems to be seven days for $401-$597 (depends on the day). That's $57- $85 a day. http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/tickets/winter/index.htm
The Early Early Bird special for a $1,199 season pass deal is now over, sorry I didn't tell you in time (#FAIL). The new season pass prices will go up on 8/31/2011.
If you live in Washington state or Canada you can get an Edge card which will give you discounts on lift tickets (http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/tickets/edge/gate.htm?passthru=true&referer=%2Ftickets%2Fedge%2Findex.htm)

DISCOUNTS AND DEMOS- A REASON TO DO STUFF

the Gypsy

It was the last Burton Demo day at Hunter so the Gypsy and I decided to demo a board we would never own.

The Method

the Method is Burton's $1,500 snowboard (yeah, there's a $1,500 snowboard- shake head in shame). It's a directional with an Alumafly core (looks like an aluminum honey comb, makes it über light, big no for rails). It's got carbon i-beam and fiberglass. It has UltraMeth Construction which I think means that they smoke Meth while they think up prices.

Paul
 Paul was working the Yurts
He gave the Gypsy a 156 and me a 160. The Gypsy rides a 149 and I ride a 156; we decided to go big.

We hiked out of bounds and rode down a creek. We might have hit some things; that board is like a magnet.

the creek

Gymnast Gypsy

Consensus:  excellent for creek riding!!!!!! and its shiny like a rainbow trout

SUGARBUSH- BE BETTER THERE

The Yeti and Lincoln Peak

I went on a romantic trip with Q to Sugarbush. We were going to spend the time antiquing and tasting maple syrup. But it was -10, so we thought we better hit the slope. Hard snow and freezing conditions are perfect for Q with his fractured ribs. We didn't have any fresh snow, but there was no one there!

no one on the chair at -15

I might have seen 60 people in the two days that we were there and most of them worked at the resort.

Sugarbush is in upstate VT. It's about six hours from the city if you do everything right. The summit of Mt. Ellen is 4,083' and the resort has a vert of 2,600'. You can start on the Lincoln Peak/Castlerock Peak side or the Mt. Ellen side. There is a lift that runs across from one side to the other, but a local told me that they rarely run it. Sugarbush seems to be all about trees, they make up half of the resort. The rest is bumps and then they groom a little bit. The runs have all sorts of natural lips, drifts, and bumps that are so fun to play on.

these mounds are giant sleeping tortoises

The second day we were there they only ran a few lifts because it was so cold, but there was still more than enough terrain to explore .

Sugarbush is in the the Green Mountain National Forest and the Mad River Valley. The closest town is Warren, VT; A small mountain town with no chains.

church in Warren
There are a series of bed and breakfasts, but we stayed at Sugarbush Inn which is 100 years old. It is giant and gorgeous. A shuttle bus runs from there to the mountain (which is only 5 min. away) Sugarbush Inn was old and creepy- which I love.

Verdict- would love to come back and have a tree guide; oh and perhaps have it warmer than -10.
ps skier girl with the steal your face sticker on your helmet, you rip and thanks for letting me be a creepy follower

Jeremy Jones' Deeper- Teton Gravity Research

I really respect Jeremy Jones. He loves the mountains (POW protect our winters http://protectourwinters.org/why-join-pow/). I like what he stands for. Two years ago my dad and I were in Targhee for a week and so was Jermey Jones with his family. I was too nervous to say hi, so I just creepily followed him around the hill. This time when I saw him I just creepily filmed him.
Jeremy Jones' Deeper- Teton Gravity Research from elisabeth toft on Vimeo.

I was born in Wyoming, but when I was six we moved to Idaho. We would go back to Wyoming every year before Christmas and ski Grand Targhee.  Sometimes I would see the Jones brothers (the guys who started TGR) drop the crazy cliffs  on the side of Targhee from the lift. Little did I know what and who they would become (http://www.tetongravity.com/) .

Deeper is Jeremy Jones's project.  It covers two seasons of monstrous mountains.  Deeper is BIG mountain riding.  All the lines are reached on skins or by climbing. All the riding is done on splitboards. They camp in the mountains for weeks and spend many days snowed in their tents (crazy eyes). They go places where people have rarely been and do some really insane stuff. I kept wondering if  they were going to come out alive or if they even really knew what they were doing. The guys turn back when they have to, knowing the mountain is in charge. It was beautiful to see a snowboarding film that wasn't about tricks. It was about truly riding and the love of the mountain.
My final thoughts: I need a splitboard.

Thanks Sugarbush (http://www.sugarbush.com/) for the tickets!
